This is to document the story of Ma3.
Ma3 does not fulfil the Menu Requirement, whereas the former Ma7 does. Many have been affected by this change, and might wish to learn the details.
Once upon a time, there was a class numbered Ma3 at Caltech. It is the much beloved ``Number Theory for Beginners.'' Several years ago, Ma3 was changed to Ma7 on a three-year trial period as a menu course. Menu courses are supposed to broaden one's horizons. During the trial period, too many (eventual) math majors took the course. The Core Curriculum Steering Committee decided the trial was not successful. Therefore Ma7 is no longer offered and is reverted back to Ma3, which does not fulfil the Menu Requirement.
Without possessing the knowledge stated above, many freshmen, myself included, expressed strong emotions regarding the sudden alteration of the course manifest. I even started gathering people to form a protest. I also attempted to enquire more information regarding this matter. After communicating with Registrar Mary Morley and Professor Richard Wilson, I am suddenly capable of seeing the reason behind the decision. Even though I REALLY wanted to take number theory as a menu class, I have to admit I totally agree with their decision. I also want to express my appreciation towards the aforementioned people. Finally, Ma3 is moved out of conflict from Ec11 by my request, so I am actually going to take Ma3 despite it not fulfilling the Menu Requirement.
If you were thinking of taking Ma7, but are no longer considering Ma3, think again. Your life might be changed! If you are a mathematics major (like me), then I do not really care. Otherwise, it might be your one chance to taste some real mathematics. Consider it. If faced with overloading, defer menu till next year. There is nothing wrong with taking menu as a sophomore. I am doing it, so could you.
The details of the correspondences between a few parties involved are here for reference (only Caltech network).
